Utility and special effects
Pedals none of the other categories covers: they do not boost or distort anything, but do something to the signal that belongs nowhere else — a buffer that keeps the top end intact over a long cable, a sustainer that makes a note ring on indefinitely, a doubler that makes it sound like two guitarists are playing, an IR loader that emulates a speaker cabinet. Each is a pedal you buy for one particular problem.
