A noise gate mutes the signal once it drops below a set threshold, cutting the hum and hiss from single coils, high-gain settings or cheap power supplies without you having to stop playing. That is a different kind of dynamics effect than a compressor: a compressor acts continuously on volume, a gate switches on or off.
